Remarks made by Ambassador Dr. S. Jaishankar at the Central Conservatory of Music during the launch of the first ever publication of the Chinese musical transcription of Tagore’s lyrics, 17th May 2012

1. I am happy to join all of you today at the launch of the first Chinese publication of the lyrical translation and transcription into musical score of the songs of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. It is an impressive endeavour and I commend the two Chinese scholars Mr. Bai Kaiyuan and Dr. Liu Yuening, for their dedication and effort.

2. Last year, both India and China celebrated the 150th birth anniversary of Tagore. In 2012 – the “Year of Friendship and Cooperation” – we inaugurated the first ever Chinese language production of Tagore’s play Chitrangada at Lanzhou University. In Shanghai, our Consulate General in collaboration with the Shanghai Municipal Archives has brought out a publication with new material about Tagore’s visit to China. Today’s launch represents another step forward in China’s growing appreciation of Tagore and his works.

3. The Central Conservatory of Music also deserves recognition for the role as a platform for promotion of India-China cultural exchanges and people-to-people contacts. I thank the leaders of the Conservatory for extending their support and hope that our collaboration will grow even further in future.
