Press Release - 5th India-China Annual Defence Dialogue, January 14, 2013

1. The 5th India-China Annual Defence Dialogue (ADD) took place in Beijing on January 14, 2013. The Indian side was led by Defence Secretary Shri Sashi Kant Sharma while the Chinese side was led by Deputy Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen Qi Jianguo. The discussions took place in a friendly and cooperative atmosphere and a forward-looking manner.

2. The two sides discussed bilateral, regional and international issues of common interest including their assessments of the security situation in the Asia-Pacific region and in the India-China border areas.

3. The two sides agreed to expand and enhance bilateral exchanges covering the Armies, Navies and Air Forces of the two countries. They agreed to advance mutual strategic trust and enhance mutually beneficial practical cooperation.

4. The two sides reviewed ongoing measures to ensure peace and tranquility on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between the two countries, since this is a strategic understanding between the two Governments.

5. The two sides agreed upon a plan of bilateral military exchanges for 2013 including their next joint military exercise.

6. Defence Secretary Shri Sashi Kant Sharma called on General Xu Qiliang, Vice-Chairman of China’s Central Military Commission (CMC). During the meeting, General Xu called for enhancement of mutual trust between the two countries and said that consultations between the two sides should focus on commonalities which are more than the differences. He further said that good relations between India and China are important for both countries as well as for world peace and security.

7. It was agreed that the 6th India-China ADD would be held in India at a mutually convenient time.
