1. The Embassy of India in Beijing, with support from the Tea Board of India and localc ollaborators, organized a Tea Promotion and Tea Tasting event on 28 February 2014.

2. About 150 participants drawn from tea companies, connoisseurs, importers, tea retail chain stores, investors and members of the media attended the event. In his remarks, the Deputy Chief of Mission Dr. B. Balabhaskar recalled the ancient links between India and China and the strong tea drinking traditions in both countries. Mr. Cai Jun, Secretary General of the Tea Chamber under the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By-products also spoke on the occasion about the potential for increased tea trade between the two countries.

3. Four premium varieties of Indian tea including the world famous Darjeeling tea, Assam, Nilgiri and Kangra Tea were introduced to the audience through teamaking demonstration and tea tasting.

4. Demand for black tea is rising in China as it diversifies its tea drinking habits and the beverage gains popularity amongst the youth. As the largest producer of black tea accounting for 38% of world production, India is well positioned to satisfy Chinese demand for black tea. India’s annual tea production is around one billion kgs, of which about 80% is black tea.
