Press Release: Inauguration of Indian Film Festival in Xi'an

A one-week Indian FilmFestival was inaugurated in Xi'an on 21st October. The Film Festival is part ofongoing series being organized by the Embassy of India across six differentcities of China since August this year under the "Glimpses of India"Festival to mark the India-China Year of Friendly Exchanges.

The Embassy is holdingthe Film Festival in Xi'an in partnership with China's State Administration ofPress, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT), Shaanxi SAPPRFT andLumiere Cinemas. Ms. Namgya Khampa, Counsellor (Trade, Commerce and Economic) fromthe Embassy and Mr. Luan Guozhi, Deputy Director General, Film Bureau of SAPPRFTinaugurated the Film Festival at Lumiere Cinemas yesterday in the presence ofaround 300 people includingrepresentatives from the media and local Government, business and culture. Theinauguration ceremony was also attended by Deputy Director General Of ShanxiForeign Affairs Office Mr. Zhang Shaojun, and Deputy Director General of ShanxiSAPPRFT Mr. Wang Fubao.

Counsellor Namgya Khampain her remarks emphasized the role that films have played in strengthening thebonds of friendship between India and China. She expressed the hope that moreIndian movies would reach wider audiences in China. Later next month, Chinawill be the Country of Honour during the International Film Festival of Indiain Goa.

The Indian Film Festivalis anchored in the 1st Xi’an Silk RoadInternational Film Festival currently underway in Xi'an that has Indian entriesas well. Earlier in the day, the first bilateral film co-production project waslaunched in presence of Embassy and SAPPRFT officials entitled "kungfu yoga". This is the firstproject to be initiated after both Governments signed a Memorandum ofUnderstanding on Film Co-Production in New Delhi on 19th September duringPresident Xi Jinping's visit to India.

Apart from Xi’an,the Film Festival has run successfully in Beijing and Guangzhou and will travelto Hangzhou, Qingdao and Hong Kong in the next few months. In Xi'an, theopening movie was Queen. The other movies being screened are Jodha Akbar, Tare Zameen Par, Dil Chahta Hai, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
