Press Release: Opening of Condolence Book at Embassy

1. The Government of India announces with profound sorrow the death of Shri A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India at 1945 hours on 27 July 2015 at Bethany Hospital, Shillong. The funeral will be held in Rameshwaram on 29 July 2015.

2. Born on 15 October 1931 at Rameshwaramin Tamilnadu, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam served as the President of the Republic of India from 25 July 2002 to 25 July 2007. Before becoming President, Dr.Kalam served in several capacities including as Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India in the rank of Cabinet Minister. From a humble beginning, Dr. Kalam had an unparalleled career as an aerospace and defence scientist,leading the nation with a vision of "Developed India."

3. In a statement condoling the death of Dr. Kalam, President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee remarked:

"The passing away of former President of India, Bharat Ratna Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is a deep personal loss for me…As President of India, Dr. Kalam was immensely popular and greatly admired. His warmth, humility and simple ways endeared him to one and all. He had a special love for children and sought to constantly inspire the youth of our country through motivational speeches and personal interaction. Dr. Kalam will be long remembered for his passion for science and innovation and his contributions as an eminent scientist, administrator, educationist and writer. Dr.Kalam’s achievements as leader of India’s defence research establishment vastly enhanced the safety and security of our nation…Dr. Kalam was a people’s President during his lifetime and will remain so even after his death.”

4. The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has condoled the passing away of Dr. Kalam. “India mourns the loss of a great scientist, a wonderful President and above all an inspiring individual. Rest in peace Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Dr. Kalam…my mind is filled with so many memories, so many interactions with him. Always marvelled at his intellect, learnt so much from him. Dr. Kalam enjoyed being with people; people and youngsters adored him. He loved students and spent his final moments among them," the Prime Minister said.

5. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, a Condolence Book will be opened at the Indian Embassy, No.5, LiangMa Qiao Bei Jie, Chaoyang District, Beijing 100600 as per following details:
