Ambassador H.E. Ashok K. Kantha met with Vice Chairman of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region H.E. Erkin Tuniyaz in Urumqi on 26 August 2015.

Ambassador briefed the Vice Chairman the recent high level visits and said that there is a clear directive from the leaders of India and China to expand the engagement between states and provinces. Ambassador recalled the historical links between Xinjiang and India and proposed a six-point proposal for expanding relations, including: increased high level exchanges, exploring sister-city/sister-state relations between Xinjiang and their counterparts in India, expanding two-way investments, enhancing cooperation in tourism, strengthening cultural and people-to-people linkages and cooperating on counter-terrorism.

Vice Chairman Erkin Tuniyaz gave a brief overview of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He responded positive to Ambassador’s six-point proposal and called for strengthening two way investment flows, cooperation in skill development and expanding cultural contacts.

Vice Chairman Erkin Tuniyaz also hosted a banquet in honour of Ambassador and his delegation.

Earlier in the day, Ambassador Ashok K. Kantha met with H.E. Xu Weihua, Deputy Political Commissar of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC). Ambassador said that the leaders of India and China have agreed to forge a Closer Developmental Partnership, an important aspect of which is mutual support for each other's developmental aspirations and all-round development of the relationship. He called for expanding business and people-to-people links between Xinjiang and India and invited companies in Xinjiang to take part in India's developmental process under the Make in India campaign. Deputy Political Commissar H.E. Xu Weihua gave a brief overview of XPCC and agreed with Ambassador on the need to expand mutual understanding and commercial and people-to-people contacts engagement between Xinjiang and India.
