Press Release: Felicitation of Professor Jin Dinghan by Sahitya Akademi

1. Embassy of India organized a felicitation ceremony today to present Professor JinDinghan the Sahitya Akademi honorary fellowship. The ceremony was attended bymore than 50 people including Indian and Chinese writers, publishers, membersof the media and members of Professor’s Jin family.

2. Secretary of Sahitya Akademi Dr. K Sreenivasrao conferredthe fellowship to Professor Jin Dinghan and read the citation.

3. At the felicitation ceremony Vice President of Peking University Mr. Li Yansong recalling the contribution made by Professor Jin towards deepening India-China cultural and literary exchanges said that India and China should work towards improving cultural contact and people to people exchange.

4. Professor Jin Dinghan is a renowned Indologist, scholar and writer. He has contributed immensely towards India-China cultural exchange. He has inspired in many generations of Chinese students a love for Indian culture and literature. Professor Jin is widely respected for translation work of Indian literature. He has translated several major Indian Hindi classics into Chinese, including the Ramcharitmanas,Premchand’s Nirmala, Yashpal’s Jhutha Sach and has also written the Hindi-Chinese dictionary and Hind-Chinese Idiom Dictionary. These books have played an important role in keeping alive the study of Hindi in China.

5. In 1955, Professor Jin studied Hindi from the prestigious Peking University and later became Professor of Hindi at the University. In 1990 hewas awarded the India-China Friendship award and the World Hindi Honorary Awardin 1993. In 2001 he was also awarded the George Grierson Award by the Indian President. Professor Jin has not only contributed greatly to promoting greaterappreciation of Indian culture in China, but is also a driving force forgreater cultural interaction between India and China.
