Press Release: Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations

On 2nd October 2015, Embassy of India, Beijing celebrated the 146th Birth Anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, in the premises of the Jintai Art Museum at Chaoyang Park, Beijing.

The function began with the laying of wreaths and paying of floral tributes to the Gandhi statue in Chaoyang Park by Ambassador Ashok K Kantha and Ms. Ruo Hua, Director of the Jintai Art Museum.

In his remarks on the occasion, Ambassador Kantha noted that Gandhiji was remembered not just as a national icon but also as a great global leader and that on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations when an ambitious post-205 agenda has been adopted, his teachings are increasingly relevant. Ambassador emphasized that the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi have always drawn interest in China and this is now increasingly evident. Gandhi received the support of the Chinese people in South Africa during his first peaceful protest there in 1906. During his visit to India in September 2014, President Xi Jinping had visited the Gandhi Ashram in Sabarmati and paid a personal homage to him. Ambassador Kantha also drew attention to Prime Minister Modi’s inauguration of the Center for Gandhian and Indian Studies at Fudan University, the first institution in China dedicated to Gandhian studies.

The speech was followed by a cultural programme and a recitation of Gandhiji’s sayings by young Chinese students.
