INDIA HOSTS A PROMOTIONAL EVENT IN QINGDAO

Last two year has witnessed a quantum jump in the exports of India’s marine products to China. This year in the first nine months, India’s exports of marine products to China has tripled and touched almost $ 800 million as per the data released by China’s customs authority just two days back. At this speed, we are bound to cross $ 1 bn mark in the year 2019. Recently, on 9 th October a trade delegation visited India and signed contract for import of marine products worth $ 500 million in next two years.

The Embassy of India, consulates in Shanghai and Guangzhou under the guidance of Ministry of Commerce and Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has been actively promoting the Indian marine products in China and remained intensely engaged with various stakeholders. Sensing a great opportunity to pitch for India’s strength in this sector, the Embassy of India organized a promotional event and buyer seller meet on marine products in collaboration with MPEDA on the side lines of China Fisheries and Seafood expo in coastal city of Qingdao, which also happens to be a major port of imports.

Mr. K S Srinivas, Chairman of MPEDA led a delegation of 40 plus Indian exporters and exporters associations for the event which witnessed huge response from Chinese importers with more than 50 participants from 25 major importing companies participating in the event. The CCPIT of Qingdao and CFNA partnered with Indian Embassy for organizing this event.

Mr. Srinivas briefed about India’s strength in this sector with India emerging as 4 th largest exporters of sea food in the world. India is second largest aquaculture producer, 3 rd largest fish producer in the world with exports of marine products worth $7bn. China is a major importer of marine products with imports of around $ 12 bn. He also elaborated at length about massive efforts put in by India in ensuring the quality of the products thereby earning a great reputation in international market.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Prashant Lokhande, Economic and Commercial Counsellor of India Embassy emphasized on the huge potential and set an ambitious target of achieving $ 2 bn exports in near future. With growing demand in China and India’s proven strength, this target is not impossible to achieve. He assured all support to Indian exporters and China’s importers and thanked China’s Commerce Ministry and GACC for their support.

Embassy of India has been promoting various products such as Indian grapes, sugar, rice, pharmaceuticals, tea, oil meals, IT and ITeS etc. in which India has proven global strength but little market share in China.
